Moonlight

Here is a poem I wrote in the Narragansett language:

ntauhaunanatinnehòmmin sowwaníu wequáshim
yo mesh nowékeshemcuttineapúmmishen
wetapwâuwwas uppansìnea
ewo npepeyup
cowaûtunumun wauontamesumun
aquie mishommoke

i cannot search for moonlight in the southland-
i have gone thus far and it only passes by.
"sit and talk with us,"
i ask the moon.
he is innocent and
i have been here long.
"i want to understand you,"
i tell him.
but he is wise,
and will not name the dead.
